OUTLINE

At a time of profound transformation in the global cultural landscape, the social role and public function of art are being re-examined. Art is no longer merely an object of aesthetic appreciation, but increasingly a vital pathway for engaging with social issues, connecting diverse communities, and advancing sustainable development. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has already accumulated rich and influential experience in this field. Jointly organized by the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and the MA in Cultural Management programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, this lecture aims to build a platform for dialogue across the Greater Bay Area and beyond.

The lecture will explore these themes from multiple perspectives. Centered on the theme of “Culture for a Sustainable City,” it will outline the fundamental frameworks of sustainable development and, drawing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), illustrate how culture can drive sustainability through advocacy, practice, and conservation, with reference to both international and local cases. The discussion will then turn to the governance and social dimensions of sustainability in artistic practice, addressing structural issues such as creative ethics, funding models, and the growing sustainability requirements of art institutions, while examining how artistic practice is embedded in and responds to broader social ecosystems. The lecture will also introduce AEI, an interdisciplinary research project initiated by the G-SIP at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, presenting emerging analytical frameworks and practical pathways in this field.
