Lecture Outline

Dalang (shadow puppeteer) Wayan Wija once said, "In Bali, if you call yourself an artist, people will find it strange and ask what kind of artist you are. Because here, many people master multiple arts." In Bali, a single person may simultaneously be a dancer, a dalang, a gamelan musician, or a carver. The various arts in Bali are interconnected and mutually interactive. Balinese people who master multiple arts regenerate and create new artistic forms through a process of transplantation, integration, and reconfiguration. This lecture will enter the world of light and shadow in Bali, exploring how Balinese shadow puppetry has absorbed and drawn from other theatrical forms since the 1970s, evolving into various new forms. It will also introduce the cross-disciplinary collaboration between American filmmaker Larry Reed and Balinese artists in the 1990s, which created electro-optical shadow puppetry that integrates elements of film, shadow puppetry, and dance.
